Dry Whey – Western Europe Market Update

The price range for European dry whey has increased in the lower range while remaining unchanged in the upper range. Sales of dry whey remain stable, although some industry sources indicate a slight slowdown during this time of the year. Dry whey exports are stable compared to last year, with some buyers in Asian countries purchasing less than this time last year. However, this decrease is balanced out by an increase in dry whey exports to China. Dry whey inventories are available to meet current market demands. Cheese manufacturers are operating on a schedule of active production, leaving enough liquid whey for drying.

In Germany, there is almost a parallel trend between prices of sweet dry whey and prices of SMP, with a stable gap between them. Prices for whey powder are at a lower level, confirming the belief that this powder may be increasingly used as a cheaper substitute for SMP, especially in developing countries (DCs).
